Books
The Count
of Monte Cristo by
Alexandre Dumas. Dantes spends over a decade in prison for a crime he did not
commit. While he comes out of prison broken he finds his way back to humanity.
Harry
Potter series by JK
Rowling. I have learned more about evil and how to fight it reading these books
than with any others thus far. Whenever I slip into a bout of depression, I pop
in a Potter movie, finding my way back to the light through the struggles of
one small boy.

Community
Feed the
Neighborhood Night: Restaurants waste so much food it should be a crime. Why
not feed it to the homeless instead of tossing it out? Our restaurant work
experience says that whatever is left after three days must be thrown out; open
the doors to the homeless instead.
Open to All
Free Night (donations accepted) eg. have Wednesday Night Spaghetti Dinner with
garlic bread, salad and wine set up like a buffet. Place jar for monetary
donations and large baskets for food, clothing, toiletries for poor near the
door. You'll be surprised at peoples generosity!
Food
Baskets: include recipes for use of food items, menu for the week; information
packet that includes nutritional facts, calorie count, etc.; herbal/medicinal
facts; toiletries including toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, paper
towels or hand wipes, sanitary pads/tampons, and money.
"Pay it
forward" Campaign: watch the movie to get the idea of what we are talking
about. Basically if someone shows you kindness, pass it on to someone else. For
instance, I was standing in line in the food court, brain dead from the midterm
I'd just taken, not realizing I had no money until I tried to pay. I almost
burst into tears at my predicament when the guy behind my paid for me. I looked
for him for days afterwards wanting to pay him back, but never saw him again. A
couple of weeks later a classmate of mine was sitting at the foot of the
library steps crying her eyes out because she had missed the bus; next one
would not come for over an hour and she needed to get home to her baby girl. I
gave her a ride! I was shown a kindness I was not able to pay back so I paid
forward instead.
